1. They said you couldn't do it if you didn't know where to begin. They're wrong. You can start anywhere you want. From there you have a choice to keep going to change places if you think that's what's best.
2. Not knowing how to do it is not an excuse.
3. You can have all the best tools and still do it poorly.
4. It's ugly. It's messy. It seems hopeless. Someone has to do it, so suck it up.
5. If it's not cutting nicely there, cut somewhere else.
6. Cut too small, it won't feel like you're eating ham. Cut too big and it won't fit in the tupper ware.
7. Your hands are going to hurt, especially if you've done a lot. Don't let that stop you; you're almost there.
8. You will realize you want to see how this is done by other people even after you yourself have done it. Go ahead, learn, even if you already should have. Better late than never.
9. Of course your mom can do a better job. Of course other people can do a better job. But that's just because they've done this before.
10. It's okay to fail as long as you're going to do better next time. Don't be too hard on yourself; everyone's first looks like scrap.
11. However, if you've actually done well, even just the little pieces, stop and pat yourself on the back. It's fun, it's happy, and it's a really nice way to relax your tired hands.
12. Remember, this is the best way to really learn.
